About TntWare

 Referred by

Print this Topic Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

The Referred by field offers a lookup when you fly your cursor over it. If a contact has multiple referrers, the words “Referred by” will be bold-faced, and the primary referrer will appear in this box.

 Selecting a primary referrer

Click on the words "Referred by" to bring up the <Choose one> dialog box, allowing you to add/modify/delete referrers and select a primary referrer (the one whose name will appear on the TNT Tab). Click on the contact you want to be the primary contact (does not need to be the top on the list).

 Referred by field

The Referred by name appears twice in the TntConnect database. One field lists only the primary referrer (Field name: "ReferredBy"), while the other one lists all Referrers (Field name: "ReferredByList").

 Lookups and Referrers

When doing lookups, you can lookup by either field. For example, you can do a lookup only on the "Referred by" field to find contacts who are the primary referrer. Or, you can do a lookup on the "Referred By List" field to see all contacts of a referrer.

I see that there is an "add" button in the "referred by" selection list. Is it possible to connect that to a real TNT contact? I am trying to connect the referrer and the referrals without having to re-enter the name through the "add referrals" process.

Hi Kyle, It's just a free-form field.  But I'll consider this as a nice suggestion!

The Referred By field is a free-form field for another good reason: Sometimes the "referrer" is not a contact in the database. For example, I attended a Missions Conference at my church and a number of people signed up to receive my newsletter. I put "2006-04 Missions Conference" as the referrer. Also, when I was originally raising my support, I had many contacts without a referrer (because "I" was the referrer), but I put the source of the contact in the Referred by box. For example, "Boy Scouts" (for Scout leaders or parents I talked to), "Sunday School", "Campus Ministry", etc. I have other referrals that were from groups or events--more so in my original MPD time than currently, but I would guess about 1/4 of my contacts who actually have a referrer, do not have one that is a contact in my list.

I'd like to revisit this. Bob's logic is sound, but I was wondering if there would be a possibility of OPTIONALLY linking it to an existing contact. I'm trying to figure out a way of creating a graphical representation of our referrals tree to encourage people to refer us to friends.

If they can see that it takes a lot of contacts for us to raise our support, they will know that we NEED contacts. Also, I'd like to show which links in the chain actually support us and which ones do not, showing that even if they can't support that their referrals are VALUABLE!
